With the global population expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050, there is a continuous need to increase food production. Countries around the world, especially developing countries where the pervasiveness of hunger and food scarcity is more acute, are resorting to various counter strategies to meet the growing demand and to avert food insecurity.
As a company with a fore vision, we identified the importance of home gardening to mitigate the adverse effect of food shocks and food price volatilities. Hence, we decided to conduct awareness programs aiming at the importance of home gardening as a strategy to enhance household food security and nutrition. This program was conducted with the support of Derana Television.
We were able to hold a successful farmer meeting in the Kilinochchi district. This was organized with the participants of agricultural officials and members of the government administrative service of the region. Organizing such an event allowed us to understand the farmer’s needs, and challenges. Also, this created an opportunity for us to propose solutions to their concerns.
During this program we emphasized that home gardens are an integral part of local food systems, addressing food insecurity and malnutrition as well as providing additional benefits such as income and livelihood opportunities for resource-poor families.
