Cleaner Production Practices
Optimizing fertilizer blending is a key component of our Cleaner Production efforts by initiating various risk assessments and monitoring nutrient ratios and customizing blends to meet specific crop needs, we aim to enhance sustainability, improve crop yields, and mitigate environmental risks.
This reduces environmental impact through reducing emissions ,while ensuring effective nutrient delivery for paddy and tea farming.
Nutrient Monitoring: By tailoring nutrient blends to soil conditions and crop needs, we prevent nutrient overuse, which reduces the risk of runoff and contamination.
Our Journey towards Net-Zero by 2050
We’ve made significant strides in reducing energy consumption, particularly in our fish liquid fertilizer production process. Previously, we used energy-intensive machinery to crush fish waste, but we have since expanded our capacity and transitioned to a natural fermentation process, which no longer requires mechanical crushing. This shift eliminates the need for electronic crushing machines and reduces our reliance on electricity from direct lines and generators.
Additionally, solar power supports our normal electricity needs, reducing our carbon footprint and dependence on non-renewable energy sources. We have also take large strides through installing solar panels to power our normal electricity usage, reducing dependence on non-renewable sources. We continuously upgrade our facilities with energy-efficient technologies, such as LED lighting and optimized motors, to reduce electricity consumption and overall energy usage.
Thereby aiding our goal as a company in supporting to achieve Net-Zero by 2050
Sustainable Farming Practices
Incorporating cleaner production principles into our farming operations allows us to implement sustainable cultivation techniques. At Kotuwella Farm, we focus on:
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): By reducing pesticide use through biological controls and crop rotation, we promote healthier ecosystems and lower chemical reliance.
Efficient Water Management: Implementing Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) and precision irrigation techniques reduces water consumption and methane emissions.
Soil Health: Incorporating organic fertilizers and compost improves soil fertility, enhances carbon sequestration, and supports long-term sustainability.
Reduce , Reuse , Recycle
We have taken steps to optimize our packaging in line with Cleaner Production principles. Previously, we used High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bottles for liquid fertilizer packaging. To further enhance sustainability, we transitioned to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles, which offer several advantages:
Improved Recyclability: PET bottles are widely recycled, supporting a circular economy and reducing plastic waste.
Lower Environmental Impact: PET bottles typically use less material than HDPE, resulting in lower energy consumption and a reduced carbon footprint during production and transportation.
Durability and Reuse Potential: PET bottles extend the shelf life of our products and can be reused by customers before recycling, further reducing packaging waste.
Additionally, we promote bulk purchasing by offering fertilizers in 5L and 10L cans, which minimizes packaging materials and reduces overall environmental impact. Production waste from our organic fertilizer processes is also recycled as compost on our farms, contributing to a circular economy where resources are reused efficiently.
At Kangara we have been able to innovate new methodologies to make our products more sustainable. One of the major changes we had been able to make was to incorporate the use of PET bottles in providing our organic fertiliser , and thereby aiding our consumers to reuse and recycle the product itself , through our organisation.
Social
Farmer Education
We have also initiated various training programs and field demonstrations to educate our farmers on the efficient use of nutrients, promoting sustainable farming practices and enhancing crop health.
Beacon of Hope - Women Entrepreneurship Development Program
Our Beacon of Hope CSR initiative empowers women entrepreneurs by teaching them sustainable product development practices and aids our companies goal in incorporating People , Planet and Purpose within our frameworks. This aids us in maximising our efforts in aiding marginalised communities , affected by socio-economic conditions and also aids us in achieving SDGs 5 and 10 in promoting gender equality as well as reduced inequalities within the society.
Key strategies include:
Training on Eco-Friendly Methods: We provide participants with the knowledge and tools to adopt sustainable production techniques that minimize environmental impact in accordance with SDG 4 , quality education.
Resource Efficiency: We guide women entrepreneurs on how to maximize product quality through resource-efficient practices that reduce waste and enhance sustainability.
Governance
Research and Collaboration
In accordance with SDG17 , we actively partner with various stakeholders , ranging from our supplier chane Agriculture Department and the Tea Research Institute to optimize fertilizer usage, combining 70% chemical fertilizers and 30% organic inputs.
